What happens if your auto insurance expires an you have an accident?

Friday, October 20th, 2006

This happens more than you think, a person doesn’t or can’t pay his/her auto insurance policy on time and doesn’t try to contact the company and before they know it the auto insurance company has no choice but to cancel the policy for non payment. Believe it or not you could have continuous coverage for years without an accident and the one day you go with out coverage is when you need it. Maybe you have a slip up or an accident you are involved in or a big hail storm comes and damages your car. Guess what under no circumstance will or should the insurance company be liable for the damages, I know this may sound real harsh but it is the nature of business. This is nothing more than to get you educated about your auto insurance and help you avoid something happening to you like this. The insurance company wants to keep you on as a client so if you find yourself in a difficult financial situation or for some reason you can’t pay your policy just call your insurance company in advance and let them know. There may be a chance the company can work some sort of payment situation out with you so you can avoid going without insurance. The insurance company will be more likely to assist you if you let them know in advance and be upfront with them about your situation rather than wait until the last minute or you get a disconnection notice an then try to work a payment situation out, it may be too late at this point. Remember if you purchase a car they require you to keep auto insurance coverage while financing so without the coverage you could loose your car or worse have an accident and be responsible for the payment in full for your car and the car you had an accident with plus any medical bills they have. You would be responsible for everything as this may put you at risk of loosing everything. If that is not enough if you get pulled over without insurance you will get fined in states that require you to have insurance. So just be prepared, make the call and please make sure you are caught up and keep your auto insurance current. An accident without auto insurance not only affects you but it also could put the other driver in a very bad situation.

Should you declare all your accidents?

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

You see consumers all the time getting auto insurance quotes and not being honest about their driving record. Then a month or two later the auto insurance company has to raise the premium to the correct amount and the consumer is very angry at the price change. To avoid this every consumer should just declare any accidents or speeding tickets they have on their driving records, this will avoid any confusion and allow you to get a very accurate price quotes and save you a lot of trouble in the long run. The insurance company will find out about any accidents or tickets at some point. The importance of getting an accurate auto insurance quote is the amount of money it can cost you. Companies can vary as much as $600 per policy and an accident or a ticket could be a large sum of this amount. An example could be insurance company A offers big savings over insurance company B with no accidents or tickets, but with an accident or ticket insurance company B has substantial amount of savings. Therefore you go with insurance company A thinking you will be saving money until the insurance company finds out about the accident or ticket and your rates almost double to the amount you would be paying if you decided to go with insurance company B in the first place. So you may end up paying $200-$400 more than you should have if you declared all your accidents and tickets upfront. This is just an example of how not declaring all your accident and tickets while shopping for auto insurance could end up costing you a lot of money in the long run. So please take are advice and make sure you are honest while shopping for your auto insurance policy and you will not be disappointed in the long run.
