Using my wife’s credit card with no resistance by merchants

Posted by: info | November 26, 2006

I lost my credit card the first part of Septemeber this year at a ball game. I notified the company that night about the incident. They told me the card was cancelled and I would receive a replacement within 7 days. This is the card my wife and I use most for all of our purchases to help track spending on our account. The next day I decided to use my wife’s credit card since she has 2 of them. One of the cards fit on her key chain and the other is regular size. So, to get gas I decided to use this card until the new one arrived. Well, the bank sent me a new card in which I had to use at an ATM before the card was activated. I live about 40 miles from my bank (this is to make it harder for me to get money, it works real well for us and helps us save) so I have just put off getting the new card activated until I needed to make a trip to the bank. I have been using my wife’s credit card for 2 months now without any resistance at all from any merchants. I use this on a daily basis and not one person or merchant has asked for my ID or looked at the name on the card. They could not have looked at the name because my wife has a name that couldn’t be associated with a guy. So the merchants have either not paid attention to the name on the card, or just plain don’t care. I think this is part of the reason we have so much credit card fraud in America. The merchants need to do a better part in helping us defend against fraud. They should be required to ask for ID at the very least. It only takes a second and could save many people from disaster. If you write a check you need to give out a lot of information almost too much to be safe. You have to let the merchant write down your ID, telephone number, and the date your ID expires. So why do credit cards have to be so different? I will continue to use this card at different locations until someone stops me. Then I will send a nice letter about that person to the store management about the difference this valuable employee is making. Do you think merchants and vendors should be held accountable for their employees and should take steps to help us cut down on fraud?
