Affirmative action! Good or Bad?

Posted by: info | January 18, 2007

Do you think it is fair for schools and employers to have affirmative action in place? If you are not familiar with affirmative action it is positive discrimination that gives minorities or female gender an upper hand or a better shot at getting in school or job based on race or gender.

If you have a Hispanic, African American or other minority application who is equally qualified to a Caucasian that application is accepted first. There has been and still is quite a bit of racism in the world. To promote equality and diversity the minority should get the position in this case.

If you apply for one of these jobs you may get 10 points for being a minority and 10 more for being in the military. So you can get a score of 120 for being a minority and have served in the military. This seems to be good to certain degrees, but if they score equal on the test the minority would still get the job. This would mean the Caucasian scored 10-20 points better on the test and is clearly a more qualified candidate based on test scores but misses out on the job. Is this who the employer really wants on their staff? Please note I am not 100% sure this information is still up to date. This was how the process worked in the late 90’s. I am not for sure if they score it different now, but this article is just an opinion and this is just an example to show how the process can be done.

I would find this unfair to me (a woman) when they require employers to interview minorities or women before selecting an application. I don’t think this helps much and it may end up hurting these applicants in the long run. It not only waste time for the applicants but also for the employers. While wasting our time we could have missed out on a high paying job elsewhere. Who knows, the employer may have already made up their mind on who to hire. The could just be going through the process. I have heard that certain sports have similar rules required for teams interviewing for a head coach.

Affirmative action may also seem unfair if the state, government or other company pays employers extra to have a certain amount of minorities or women on staff. Do these employers really want us or are they just trying to make more money?

If affirmative action is in place we need to try to make the most of it. This could allow future generations better futures and if done right it may also benefit the economy. Personally I don’t like having an advantage over someone. I wish that the racism and discrimination would vanish by all parties and then employers and schools could just select the most appropriate and most qualified person for the position. But until then we probably need affirmative action to make a more level playing field.

This makes the world equal. If affirmative action don’t exist, minorities get cheated.

This action is needed for college students. Without this, the minority just can’t make it fairly.

It is the only way minorities can have a fair chance. We need more affirmative action in the country.

Affirmative action isn’t fair. Why can’t we pick and choose people based on their qualifications, experience and education instead of race?
