Cameras - The New Police Officer

Posted by: info | January 19, 2007

Cameras at intersections and on the streets are growing rapidly across the country. They now have officers who watch the cameras around the clock. In some cities in which photos are enforced each camera can bring in about 100,000 each year. You can get ticketedand have to appear in court as if you was pulled over by a police officer. And worst of all your auto insurance rates will be sure to increase if you don’t keep that ticket off your driving record. If you choose to fight the ticket you will almost always be proven guilty as the eye in the sky don’t lie. The police force will not send you a ticket if they aren’t confident you ran it.

Knowing all this information I think the cameras are a great asset for each community. Even if the cameras are not strictly enforced, it still forces drivers to think and be more careful as the light turns red. Most drivers will now stop and slow down when the light turns yellow if they see a camera.

Before cameras a lot of drivers would actually speed up when the light turned yellow to make sure they beat the red light. Most of us have probably done this at some point in time. But this is very dangerous.

I think these cameras also help a lot with our safety. If you are going through a light and someone going the other direction runs a red light, it would be almost impossible to avoid an accident. Worst of all it would more than likely impact the side of your car where air bags don’t always exist. This can cause major injuries, damages and even death to drivers and passengers in all cars.

If this helps keep red light runners in line, we will all be a little safer. Once these dangerous drivers get ticketed they will more than likely slow down at all red lights. I think the police force could even put dummy cameras up and provide even more protection.

Does the police force use the money wisely? I wish the city would allow us to vote on how to use the money. I think they should use it on paying officers more, funding roads and intersections and lower our taxes. But I highly doubt this will ever happen. Be safe and always look both ways before proceeding through any intersection. You never know what may happen. The red light intersections are some of the most dangerous places on the roadways. Hopefully the cameras the new police officer can help prevent accidents and make these intersections safer.
