Meaner people get better service and deals.

Posted by: info | February 19, 2007

Have you ever noticed that the meaner you are in dealing with a manager or supervisor the better they treat you. I worked retail sales for many years and polite and courteous people always got shafted. Why is this?

The managers or people in charge probably seem to worry about mean or rude people going to their boss, or they want to get rid of you. They are scared or to be honest cowards. If they are in position to make you happy when you are rude, why can’t they do it when you are giving them respect and being polite?

I can’t figure this out. The truth is it pays to be rude and raise havoc. I know this may seem against all the advice you have ever heard but it is true. I had a problem with a company recently over a Christmas purchase. I wanted a refund or exchange for the faulty merchandise I bought. I talked with the customer service rep, her supervisor and the store manager without any luck. Finally, I contacted the better business bureau and filed a complaint. I had documentation and names of everyone I spoke with in the store. Within 2 weeks of filing the compliant a member from the stores customer service team contact me. She offered a full refund and a $25.00 gift card in exchange for me updating the BBB compliant to satisfied. This is all I ever wanted and then some. I did not need the gift card.

If the store manager would have handled this properly in the beginning, the store wouldn’t have a complaint on file with the BBB and they would have a very happy customer. As it is, I no longer want to shop at this store with the exception of using my gift card and future customers may avoid this company due to the complaint.

I was very polite along the way in dealing with all customer service reps, supervisors and managers. If I would have been very rude and hateful from the start I probably could have saved some time. I know by being rude from previous experiences the manager or supervisor would probably have caved in. Since that seems to be the system in retail.

I hope this gets turned around quickly as it is very sad fact that mean or rude people come first. I know they can’t really like these customers more than polite and honest ones. Treat everyone the same and your business will strive and the word will spread quickly.
