How to avoid paying a deductible

Posted by: info | March 23, 2007

Deductibles have risen in the past few years to help reduce auto insurance rates. A lot of insurance companies will let you choose up to a $1,000 deductible. You may be able to save this money if you take the proper steps.

The higher deductible allows insurance companies to lower your premiums. Drivers will be less likely to file a claim if they have to come out of pocket $1,000. It doesn’t really make sense to file a claim for damages under $1,500 with a $1,000 deductible. So less claims and lower payouts after accidents equals savings to insurance companies.

If you have an at fault accident or hail damage or any other need to file a claim, you may can save the deductible. What you will need to do is contact your insurance company and let them know about the claim. They will let you know the process for getting estimates. Most insurance companies have you come to them to get your estimate first. Then you can go where you want and get your own estimates.

Now you will need to find a repair shop that will work with you. Be honest and tell them you are trying to get your car fixed and save on your deductible. Most repair shops deal with this on a daily basis. They may be able to save you some or all of the money if you choose them to get the repair work. They may charge you less on labor or parts to get your business. Not all repair shops will work with. You will need to keep looking to find one that will, if you want to save some or all of your deductible.
