Is Extra Internet Speed a Value?

Posted by: info | April 18, 2007

Shopping for Internet service offers many different speeds and prices. Is the extra speed worth the money? I think if you are using dial-up then there is no question about buying the extra speed. In most cases it is little or no money to add extra speed and anything extra will help. Today’s Internet uses many different flashes, photos, feeds and items designed for broadband users.

Broadband or DSL is a different world when it comes to speed options. While you will notice a tremendous difference in speed times when comparing the basic high speed Internet service packages. You are talking Kbps here. A lot of providers offer an entry level promotion with 750 or so Kbps to get you familiar with high speed. There is no comparison and the money is well worth it to upgrade to Mbps.

However, if you can only afford the base package or Kbps, you will find speeds 15-30 times faster than dial-up for only a few dollars a month. This makes it an excellent value for the money. Many companies offer 1.0, 1.5 Mbps allowing you to go up to 3.0 Mbps.

There may be a bigger difference in price, and if you are just browsing the web, the speeds shouldn’t be of concern. To be honest you probably wouldn’t know the difference if you had 1.5 Mbps and the company upgraded you to 3.0 without your knowledge. Some people would welcome and notice the speed upgrade. Gamers, software, music and DVD down loaders notice the biggest difference. Overall depending on how you use the net, it may not be worth the money. If you can’t notice the difference then money is being wasted.

If you are reading this and wanting to upgrade from dial-up for the first time, a great starting point for the money would be the first package with Mbps. These prices in general run about $20-$30 in most cases and are an excellent value for the money.
