Fast Food Combo Questions

Posted by: info | May 31, 2007

How come some fast food combo’s are priced separately? Have you ever took a look at your receipt? A fast food combo, consist of a combination of food and drinks at a discounted price. In this case we are talking about a burger, fries and a drink. I went to a popular drive-in restaurant and ordered a few combo’s and specialty items for the family and had some questions on pricing.

First I ordered a double meat, double cheese burger with peppers. This was on the menu for $4.29. The order came out correct, except for the price. The receipt had the double meat and cheese burger for $3.99, plus peppers for $0.50, for a total of $4.49. This is worth complaining about alone, however this was not the only error.

I had also ordered a combo for a burger, fries and a drink for $3.49. However, as I looked closely at the ticket, there was more problems. The burger, fries and drink was all priced individually. The burger was $2.29, fries $1.19 and drink $1.09. At the bottom of the ticket, was the combo discount of $0.68. I was over charged $0.40. There is much more to the story.

I also placed an order for a kid’s meal. This was priced at $2.99 and included a burger, fries, drink and a toy. Upon ordering I substituted a float instead of a soft drink. They had a $0.99 float promotion going on, that my son just had to have. The problem was the upgrade charge. They had the nerve to charge an additional $1.25! Plus the toy, the primary reason for the order, was not included. It was time to call out the manager. I had many questions and comments about the entire receipt.

Why do you price your combo’s separate to open up pricing errors? The manager said ”we have up to 4 people working on an order and this makes it easier to organize”. I explained that the individual items would work great if they included a broken down price, or no price listed at all.

I then asked her about the double meat and cheese burger with peppers problem. I showed her exactly how and where the item was located on the menu. She said the cashier has many burger add on options and probably has developed a habit of ringing up the burgers, then the add on. She said that was a mistake and was very sorry.

The kid’s meal was next. I told her about the missing toy and the value it has to my son. Then I asked her about the up charge on the float. She said that there system don’t take promotions in account with any upgrade. I explained that if the cashier would bring to my attention, that it would be cheaper to get a drink and order the float separately, I would be a much happier customer and more likely to come back. She did refund my money on this situation in an unlikely event.

She had to redo the ticket by having me pick out a soda, then adding the float. This was just the weirdest thing to me. She gave me a drink, that I didn’t need or want, and refunded my money. She explained that this is how it has to work in their system.

After all this was said and done, the manager gave me back a total of $0.85, the missing toy and a drink that I didn’t need. I know she was glad to get me out of there.

Why do I question such small problems? I work very hard for my money, like everyone else, and will question any mistake, no matter what the amount. Also the comments and questions that I point out, may help them fix and minimize future errors for everyone. This is just one order. I know there are thousands more just like it, that are missed, skipped or not commented on. This is costing our society thousands of dollars each day. After all, the reason for my work and information is to save you valuable time and money.
