Auto Insurance Self Help Quiz

Posted by: info | July 24, 2007

Do you pay too much money for auto insurance? Do you know or care? We have put together a list or a quiz that may help you determine if you are overpaying for auto insurance. Take the exam or quiz very seriously if you are searching for a better rate.

1. How long has it been since you compared your policy?

If it has been more than 1 year since you have compared rates, this is too long. A driver should get an auto insurance check-up at least once a year.

2. How long have you been paying the same rate?

Most auto insurance companies reward drivers with great driving records. Also, auto insurance rates tend to drop as the driver gets older. If your auto insurance company charges you the same or more money for renewing a policy, consider comparing rates.

3. Have you taken a defensive driving class?

These driving courses can save up to 10% off an auto insurance policy. Even if you took a class to keep a ticket off your record, you should inform your insurance company. They reward drivers who seek safety.

4. Have you purchased a new vehicle in the past year?

A new vehicle may change your insurance rate. However, some drivers ignore the price change. At the very least call an agent and have them do some quotes with the new vehicle. A lot of companies will lower insurance rates for new car owners. New car owners tend to pamper their vehicles much more.

5. Does your insurance company know all of your vehicles’ safety equipment?

Features such as a car alarm, anti-lock brakes and air bags can lower auto insurance rates. If a driver fails to inform their insurance company of any safety features, they could be throwing away money.

6. Have you had a ticket or accident in the last year?

Rates can vary by hundreds of dollars from company to company. Part of this is the risk factor of a driver. Some insurance companies tend to stray away from drivers with accidents or tickets on their driving record. Your company may be charging you more than another company would with an accident or ticket.

7. Has your credit changed in the past year?

Auto insurance companies charge higher rates for drivers’ with bad credit. If your credit has improved over the past year, it is time to get some comparison quotes. Rates can be 10-15% lower for a driver with good credit.

8. Have you moved to a new location?

The residence in which a driver keeps a vehicle can impact auto insurance rates. Keep in mind that if you are in a higher risk area, your auto insurance rates can increase as well. However, your insurance company needs to have your current address on file, to keep you up to date on any policy changes and more.

9. Have you had a change in family?

Auto insurance rates can be lower for a married person. Also, combining rates of both spouses can lower rates. Your insurance company may want to know if you have kids. This may also play a little role in your auto insurance policy.

This is an excellent post. I would like to add that most people need to compare quotes when they have a change in annual miles driven.
