Texas Title Transfer

Today I went to the tax office to get registration sticker for my vehicle in Texas. I was given this vehicle by my sister-in-law so she could rid of it. This was a 99 Dodge Intrepid that has some problems with the engine and radiator. I learned what the fees are in Texas to have a car registered with the state.
Here in Texas you can claim the car as a trade, gift or a purchase. If it is a trade it has to be for like items. If you have a car, you can’t trade it for a boat for example. It has to be a car for a car, boat for a boat etc… If you trade a car for another car and have to pay extra cash or get cash back in return this amount of money must be reported to the tax office.
A gift can be registered for under $100 in a lot of cases. A trade will be determined by the amount of extra money added. The purchase is according to the amount of the sale. There can be penalties for not having the car registered within 10 days of purchase. The longer the vehicle goes without being registered the more this penalty will cost. The tax office can determine the value of the car to determine the amount of taxes needed to be paid by the new owner as well.
There can be federal penalties brought to a consumer who provided any false information regarding the sale, trade, transfer, date or mileage reported on the vehicle. A consumer needs to be upfront and honest on the amount and type of purchase made. It is best to have both the buyer and seller go to the tax office together of possible. This can eliminate any missing documents and prevent delays in the vehicle registration process.
Bring proof of car insurance along with bill of sale and title with you to get a vehicle registered. Without any of these documents, you may not be able to get the car registered.
