Should I buy Uninsured Motorist Protection?
Before we go further we need to understand what auto insurance uninsured motorist protection is. According to The Texas Department of Insurance:
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist (UM/UIM) Coverage pays for your injuries and property damage caused by a hit-and-run driver or a motorist without liability insurance. It will also pay when your medical and car repair bills are higher than the other driver´s liability coverage.
Uninsured motorist protection can be a very valuable insurance coverage. There are a lot of drivers out there without insurance. It is a no win situation when you become a victim to one of these illegal drivers. Here is why I recommend the uninsured motorist protection.
This July my Husband was driving home from work when he was struck by a man without auto insurance. When we purchased our insurance we decided to sign the paperwork declining uninsured motorist protection. A very big mistake on our part. We where trying to save a few dollars and be cheap on our insurance when we bought our policy. We had a 2002 Dodge Durango. We paid cash for it so we didn't think we needed full coverage or uninsured motorist protection. Our agent was against it but we where convinced he was just trying to sell us something we did not need. We should have listened.
We have had a good driving record and we where finally getting ahead in our finances, so we thought we would take the chance. Anyway the damage done to our truck was about 8,000 total. We did not have that kind of money, so we repaired the very minimum to get it back on the road. We are now driving an ugly Dodge Durango with a cracked windshield, a dented bumber and doors, and a messsed up grill. We could try and pursue a lawsuit on this individual but the driver has no money. He was in an old pick up and does not have a job. We did call the police in which they issued him 2 tickets so hopefully he is no longer on the road. To make a long story short the $50.00 extra on our premium would have paid for itself 10 times over. We have learned our lesson and hope that this article will help you understand what could happen if you refuse the service. Drivers that are uninsured are not going away any time soon, so be prepared and select the right coverage for your auto insurance needs.
